NUCPP MEETS OHIO CANDIDATE AND DISCUSSES SOCIAL SECURITY

September 22, 2022

Pension Warriors, we recently had the privilege of attending the Teamsters Local 24 Retirees Club in Akron, OH and meeting Emelia Sykes, Candidate for Ohio District 13 Congressional Seat. Emelia Sykes is running for the vacated seat of Tim Ryan, candidate for the Ohio Senate Race. She currently serves as State Representative in Ohio’s 34th legislative district where she has served since 2014. She recently finished four years in Democratic leadership, holding the positions of Assistant Whip, Minority Whip and Minority Leader. Representative Sykes has been endorsed by the Ohio Conference of Teamsters.

Also speaking at the meeting was Jon “Bowzer” Bauman, who you might remember from Sha Na Na and Hollywood Squares. Bauman leads “The Social Security Works Political Action Committee, which was created in 2017 to elect leaders who will work to expand Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, and lower prescription drug prices for all Americans.

“Bowzer” travels the country, looking for candidates that focus on 1) protecting and improving the economic security of disadvantaged and at at-risk populations 2) Safeguarding the economic security of those dependent, now or in the future, on Social Security and 3) maintaining Social Security as a vehicle of social justice. At the Local 24 Retirees Club meeting, “Bowzer” endorsed Emilia Sykes as one of those candidates.

While the NUCPP continues its work, we are focused on retirement security issues, and are paying close attention to those candidates and issues that will protect the interests of our retirees and future retirees.
